30 yet Ageless

30 Birthday CollageGoodbye 20s, hello decade of hopefully less confusion! In a line in the famous Sex in the City movie, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) says, “Your 20s are to make mistakes, your 30s are to learn your lessons, and your 40s are to pay for the drinks!” Although I haven’t made too many mistakes, I feel this new era will be even better than I could have imagined. I’ve always been headstrong and understanding of the big picture, a holistic view of my place in the world, and I’m ready to take over!

When you’re young and people ask you what you want to be when you grew up, there is no one professional title that equates to “I want to take over the world!” But I always knew that I had a higher calling.  One of my favorite poets and writers Maya Angelou said, “People may not remember what you said, and people may not remember what you did, but they always remember how you made them feel.” Frightening but very true, and I want to bring that type of personalization and professionalism to my work. We all learn a craft eventually, but how you shape your craft, separating you from the pack is what makes individuals stand out. Carol Blymire, an inspiration and amazing professor of mine at Georgetown, has given me the tools to be confident in what I want and figure out the best recipe to achieve my goals.  Who knew that if you took the time to realize things about yourself that could make your professional and personal life easier to navigate, you can literally get anything you want, with a little hard work and resilience :). Developing my own brand and figuring out what that meant was one of the best things I could have done for myself at this age! Your mind is so clear that when opportunities come your way, you know in about 30 seconds if it is right for you and your brand. Contrarily, you are able to seek opportunities that you feel will help you on your path to happiness.

Aside from my professional life, this new era will also be a time for me to strengthen the amazing relationships & mentorships I have built. This week has been filled with phone calls, texts, emails, messages, and outreach from some of the most wonderful people I know and I cant believe I have the best friends and family in the world.  Since I decided to stop playing basketball and focus on my professional career, its been a tough road. But the people that have been in my life all long were there for me no matter what, and for that I am so grateful. This week reminded me of the inspiring and motivating individuals that have touched my heart and I owe it to them to fulfill my dreams.

Coco Chanel once said, ” A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous!  I couldn’t agree more, but I would add a third thing to that list, fearless. I’m excited for what’s to come, but even more, I’m excited to for the unknown. I may not be where I want to be, but I am working toward the mountaintop everyday. And dare someone to get in my way (Did I just rhyme). 🙂
